Microsoft Office has not been installed for the current user

This is quite a common problem it seems – after installing an update to Microsoft office, some of the applications will not open.
Here is one solution:
  1. Create a temporary Windows login account with administrative rights, then log into that new account.
  2. While logged in as the temporary user, open every Office product you have, then close one at a time (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Project etc…)
  3. After opening every Office application, start regedit. (Start > Run > then type in Regedit)
  4. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Office, and highlight Office
  5. Right click on Office, and select ‘Export’
  6. Save the .reg file somewhere on your computer – note down the location

Using Gmail as your SMTP server

If you are anything like us, you will often find yourself on the go, but needing to send and recieve emails. Changing your ISPs regularly (in our example, to Vodafone 3G) might mean that you cannot use the SMTP server you have set in your favourite mail program.

There is a way around this however – you can use Google’s Gmail as your SMTP server – that way you will be free of your ISP’s grip over outgoing mail.

You will first need to set up a gmail account – any address will do. Here is how it is done within your normal email client:

In your email client software, set the ougoing SMTP server to smtp.gmail.com

Set the username on the SMTP server to your gmail email address @gmail.com and make sure “Use username and password” is checked.

Ensure “TLS” is selected under “Use secure connection” Set the Outgoing SMTP port to 465.

Installing LAMP web server on ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04

Ever wanted to quickly configure a web server on ubuntu desktop edition? This walkthrough will show you how to install a LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) server.

There are a few different ways we can achieve the same end:

Method One:
The first way is by using the terminal. Type the following into a terminal session – note, this install may take a little while:Â…

    sudo apt-get install apache2 mysql-server php5 libapache2-mod-php5 php5-xsl php5-gd php-pear libapache2-mod-auth-mysql php5-mysql # Installs the LAMP server in one hit

Method Two:

The second way to install is using taskselÂ… – it’s a tool that groups some packages in to pre-defined tasks and allows the user to install the relevant packages for the task.

    sudo tasksel install lamp-server

Repairing a corrupt PST personal folders file

I wrote previously about corrupt PST files. The first you may know about it may be an error message like this:

Unable to expand the folder. The set of folders could not be opened. Errors could have been detected in the file drive:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst. Quit all mail-enabled applications, and then use the Inbox Repair Tool.

Thankfully, Microsoft provide a PST repair tool for just this occurance:
On the Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\LocaleID\scanpst.exe

Where LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for your installation of Microsoft Office. For example, the LCID for English (United States) is 1033. For a list of LCIDs, see Microsoft Office Help.

How to Remove Msevents / Trojan.vundo / WinFixer / Virtumond

Vindo and Virtumonde seem to be everywhere at the moment, but there is an easy way to remove them – with a tool called VundoFix. You can download this from the author’s website.

Here is a step-by-step walkthrough from geeks to go:

  • Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button Once it’s done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  •  Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK
  •  Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from “Click the Scan for Vundo button” when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.
